Nell Rankin (Montgomery 1924 - New York 2005)

He studied with Karin Branzell at Birmingham Conservatoire and Jeanne Lorraine in New York, where he debuted in concert at Town Hall in 1947, and then make his debut in opera as Amneris in Brooklyn with his Salmaggi Opera Company, alongside her sister Ruth in the lead role. In 1948 he played Ortrud at the Zurich Opera, becoming a permanent member for the next two years. In 1950 it was Amneris and Delilah in Basel and won a contest in Geneva that opened the doors of major international theaters. From 1951 he performed at La Scala (Aida, Requiem, Les Troyens), the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House in London (where he participated in a concert on the occasion of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II), particularly at the Metropolitan Opera, which was for more than two decades the principal place of business and where he appeared in 162 performances.
