Beschreibung

Rare pair of Papal States silver lucerna depicting Satyrs - Rome after 1815, mark of ANGELO GIANNOTTI (1824-1865)

spherical in shape, supported by a naked male figure, head turned towards the tank, in slight unsteady movement. The figure can be identified with a satyr (in Greek, Σάτυροι - Sátyroi), a character from Greek mythology, who according to tradition inhabits forests, mountains and wild places in general. He is a personification of fertility and the life force of nature, connected with the Dionysian cult.
The satyr is depicted with masculine human features, bearded, shaggy hair and a snub nose with animal features such as horns. He holds the four-mouthed tank of the lantern in his left hand, while his right hand is bent and slightly raised. Cylindrical plinth support decorated with flowery festoons, on a square base resting on four foliate feet.
Fully hallmarked Rome after 1815, 10 ounce and 16 denari silver standard (889/1000) and with the mark "A99G", silversmith Angelo Giannotti (1824-1865).
Base side 19 cm, fan height excluding 60 cm. Total weight 7630 g.
