(Dordrecht, 1795 – Argenteuil, 1858)

Faust and Mephistopheles
Marguerite
XIX century

Couple of crayons on paper, 122 x 90 cm
Ary Scheffer, a Dutch painter active in France, was formed in Pierre-Narcisse Guérin's studio. After exhibiting at Salon in 1819, he was influenced by the romantic spirit that dominated the French artistic scene, a theme that characterized much of his production. In addition, the painter became an excellent portraitist, as evidenced by the many portraits, including Chopin and Listz.
This artist was often able to impose himself on the masters of French romantic painting for the mystical and dreamy inspiration of his compositions, drawing inspiration from the great names of literature, including Dante, Byron, and Goethe, whom he especially appreciated his Faust, the man who sells its soul to the devil to get the absolute knowledge.
These two crayons represent the characters of the famous nineteenth-century drama - Faust and Mephistopheles and the beautiful Margherita - and resume the couple of canvases painted by the painter in 1848 and kept in Paris at the Musées de la Ville.
