Byzantine bronze griffin protome
7th century AD; height cm 23,3 (9’’); Hollow cast griffin's head emerging from three petals, with elongated sinuous neck, long pointed ears and a sharp beak; the ears, mouth and eyes are neatly bordered. The back is hollow for the attachment.
Probably once attached to the shoulder of a cauldron or furniture as component of four or three legs.

Ex M.D.H. collection (London), acquired in 1971.
