Vertical hanging scroll painted in ink and soft colours, silk frame

Signed 狩野探幽筆 (Kanō Tan’yū fude) with seal on the left side.

Provenance: an Italian private collection.
Son of Kanō Takanobu (1571-1618) and nephew of the great Kanō Eitoku (1543-1590), Tan'yū was one of the greatest artists of the Kanō school, the longest and most glorious in Japan. Appointed court painter as early as 1617, in the following years he would have made large-format works for the major Tokugawa shōgun residences, skilfully working in many different styles.
