Beschreibung

A fine and large roman carnelian agate intaglio. Apollo and Muse between a phallic herm of Pan.
1st - 2nd century A.D.
16 x 20 x 4 mm

The god is standing partially covered by an himation, he holds the lyre in his left hand and lean on a little column. His head turned to the right meanwhile his body is facing a phallic herm of the bearded Pan. In the other side, a muse, facing right with her left arm toward the herm's head. She wears a folded drapery and an himation. Her hair composed by long wavy locks and joined in a bun on the neck. Groundline. The young deity is characterized by a fine engraved body in all anatomical details. The contrapposto postures of both characters are inspired by hellenistic models. The face of Pan, is characterized by a smiling expression alluding the erotic meaning of the scene. The stone is fragmented in the lower part under the groundline and finely restored. Large dimensions and ancient wear marks. The bodies are composed with expertise and deeply engraved with mirror polished. A similar iconography is noticeable in two others intaglios from the Cabinet des Médailles, Paris, inv. 58.2303, inv. 58.2302 and published in Chabouillet, 1858, n°2302 et Mariette, Traité des Pierres Gravées, 1750, pl. XV.
