Description

VENETIAN SCHOOL, THIRD QUARTER OF THE 16th CENTURY

Lute female player

Oil on panel, cm. 95x77. Framed

The beautiful panel painting hinges on a young lady sadly immersed in distant thoughts immediately after completing the performance of the piece on the score on her lute. The work must be clearly framed within the lagoon style, with a Titian-Veronesian imprint, which developed in the second half of the 16th century and spread rapidly in Veneto and Lombardy. In addition to the stylistic argument, the subject also supports this reference, both for the chosen instrument, which is particularly successful in the Venetian musical panorama, and for the multiple comparisons with works of a similar subject by artists active in the Lombardy-Veneto area: the Concerto by Simone Peterzano (Schwerin Staatliches Museum), and above all Parrasio Micheli's Portrait of a Young Lute Player, now in the Museum of Fine Art in Houston, Texas, of which our painting is a refined replica with important variations, such as the face of the girl facing up and the presence of the staff in front of the instrument.
