Description

FOLLOWER OF FRANS SNYDERS

Eagles hunting a roe deer

Oil on canvas, cm. 153x194. Framed

This impressive and monumental hunting scene, with mighty eagles competing for a dying roe deer, depends strictly on the animal and hunting scenes of Frans Snyders, who was the greatest specialist of 17th century Flemish painting in these genres. In particular, in our painting an explicit reference can be found to the superb canvas of a similar subject owned by the Maison de la chasse et de la natue in Paris and today preserved at the Château de Chambord. LITERATURE: S. Koslow, Frans Snyders. Peintre animalier et de natures mortes 1579-1657, Anversa 1995, pp. 312-313.
