Description

ANDREA LOCATELLI (Rome, 1695 - 1741), ATTRIBUTED TO

Landscape with great rocky arch and figures

Oil on canvas, cm. 108x101,5. Framed

This refined landscape, in which the figures are immersed in a grandiose and full of animation nature, happily testifies to the role played by the example of Salvator Rosa on Andrea Locatelli's painting. Here we find the brilliant mix of the Arcadian-pastoral taste and the pre-romantic sense of the picturesque, which constitute the most vital juices of the eighteenth-century Italian landscape. Transparent comparisons can be established between our unpublished painting and works by Locatelli such as the two Rocky landscapes with river and figures (Busiri Vici, nos. 66 and 67), the two Landscapes with natural arch, shepherd and armigers (Id., Nn. 78 and 120) and the Landscape with four figures in front of a rock (Id., N.155).
LITERATURE: A. Busiri Vici, Andrea Locatelli, Ugo Bozzi Editore, Rome 1976.
