Description

A PAIR OF CLOISONNÉ ENAMELED METAL CRANES
China, early 20th century

Each standing on an oval wooden base.

The crane is in China a symbol of longevity. The word he which identifies this bird is furthermore homophone of the term for "harmony". In the imperial epoch, sculpture similar to these usually flanked the throne in the most important residences.
