A BRONZE SCULPTURE WITH ELEPHANT AND TIGERS
Japan, Meiji period

The group depicting a running elephant attacked by two tigers, one of which clings to the back and the other to the lower legs, in the center of the belly of the pachyderm the mark 誠谷作 (Seiya saku, “Made by Seiya”).

27 cm high

Provenance: Italian private collection.

The mark refers to Genryusai Seiya, a prolific workshop specialized in the production of bronze sculptures depicting animals mainly destined for the European and US market. This kind of theme was developed with greater intensity following the opening of the Tokyo Zoo in 1882.
