Description

CORRADO CAGLI (Ancona, 1910 - Roma, 1976)
Ritmi Cellulari in chiave di giallo, 1949

Oil on paper mounted on canvas, 90 x 70 cm
The artwork Ritmi Cellulari in chiave di giallo (Cellular Rhythms in the key of yellow) is one of the works from the cycle of so-called 'cellular motifs', created at the same time as Corrado Cagli's studies on the fourth dimension and on 'direct imprints' between 1949 and 1950. For Cagli, this was a crucial moment because his work was part of the debate that was taking place in Italy in those years and related to the search for new languages in the sphere of Informal Art. His research was non-figurative but far removed from the Forma 1 experience, aimed at pursuing an unusual investigation of space and linked to the most recent discoveries of physics and non-Euclidean geometry grafted onto the recovery of Cubist spatiality and metaphysical themes. Between 1949 and 1950, the artist began to practise different techniques and linguistic forms in order to differentiate himself within Italian abstractionism. Initially linked to a certain geometric concretism deriving from Magnelli and Soldati, his work gradually opened up to the heuristic influences of northern European abstractionism, particularly Kandinsky and Klee;
