Detto comunemente marmo serpentino, fu ampiamente utilizzato a partire dall'età augustea; in epoca flavia le cave, situate in un villaggio vicino Sparta, divennero di proprietà imperiale. Il suo grande valore si evince dal prezzo, pari a 250 denari per piede cubo, attribuito a questa pietra nell'Editto di Diocleziano del 301 d.C. Un lato lisciato.
