Description

Titus (79-81), Denarius, Rome, AD 80; AR (g 3,12; mm 19; h 6); IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M, laureate head r., Rv. TR P IX IMP XV COS VIII P P, seat draped; above, triangular frame decorated with palmettes or corn ears. RIC I, 24a = II, 124; C 318.
Iridescent tone, exceptionally detailed reverse: good extremely fine.

Ex Numismatica Ars Classica 86, lot 174 (The Gasvoda Collection, with a note by MSG: As with most atonement series coins the representation of the God by the reverse design is difficult. RIC calls the projections corn ears which would make this coin likely a representation of Ceres. I have not seen a coin which has enough detail to convincingly say that the projections are indeed corn ears however).
