Description

Antinous (Hadrian, 117-138), Assarion, Achaea: Argos, post AD 130; AE (g 6,59; mm 20; h 6); [ANTINOOC], draped bust r., Rv. AP[ΓIP] - IωN, male figure standing l., holding spear and sword’s scabbard. Blum, p. 35, n. 2; pl. I, 12.
Of the highest rarity, possibly only the fourth specimen known and the best in private hands. Green patina, good very fine.

A note from BCD (LHS, Auction 96, lot 1188) related to the third known Antinoos of Argos (the others being in the Gotha and Paris collections): “to find an Antinoos from Argos had always been one of my dreams, finally this one appeared in 1986 in the hands of a dealer who is not well known for his sensible prices. But how could I refuse such a unique opportunity? What remains to be seen is if it will sell for half my acquisition price or less”.
