Description

Silver pendant - circa 1950s - signed GIORGIO DE CHIRICO (1888-1978)

in gilded silver. Signed on the base "g. de. chirico".
The pendant by Giorgio de Chirico (Volo, 10 July 1888 - Rome, 20 November 1978) can be inserted into the sphere of artist's jewellery research developed in Italy after World War II.
The master's jewellery production can be divided into two parts: handcrafted one-off pieces destined for his wife Isabella and a very small circle of friends and collectors, and the so-called 'jewellery-sculptures' produced in multiples in limited editions, mostly adaptable as pendants or brooches, which were made in the early 1970s, in parallel with the small and large bronze pieces.
In his jewellery, the master extrapolates the best-known themes from his pictorial repertoire such as myth, Greek tragedy, chivalric poems, battles and landscapes.
In this necklace, the subject is one of the master's best-known: the mannequin, translated and moulded in the round in gold, is covered by the classic drapery with one shoulder uncovered, lacking eyes, ears and lips. Despite its small size, it retains its solemn, plastic figure as in the language of painting and symbolises solitude and silence, but also the artist's ability to 'see beyond' physical reality.
Height x width x depth: 6.8 x 1.7 x 1.2. Weight 24.9 g.
Item condition grading: ***** excellent.
