French ivory crucifix - 19th century


carved elephant ivory (Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797 o Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758) “Corpus Christi” placed on an ebonised wooden cross. Above the head the elephant ivory 'Titulus crucis' INRI, (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudeor um, which literally translates to 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews').
Height x width carving: 20 x 16 cm
Height x width cross: 50 x 26 cm
Item condition grading: **** good.
Accompanied by Ce.S.Ar. Centro Studi Archeometrici certificate of authenticity and by CITES certificate.
