French ivory crucifix - 19th century


carved elephant ivory (Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797 o Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758) “Corpus Christi” placed on a rosewood (Dalbergia spp) cross with a brass inlaid. Above the head the elephant ivory 'Titulus crucis' INRI, (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudeorum, which literally translates to 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews').
Height x width carving: 18 x 16 cm.
Height x width cross: 40 x 22 cm.
Total weight 420 g.
Item condition grading: **** good.
Accompanied by Ce.S.Ar. Centro Studi Archeometrici certificate of authenticity and by CITES certificate.
