HIERONIMUS CARDANUS. METOPOSCOPIA, LIBRIS TREDECIM, ET OCTINGENTIS FACIAEI HUMANAE EICONIBUS COMPLEXA. Paris 1658

In folio (8) VIII, 225, 3 pp Complete Nineteenth-century vellum, gusset and title on the spine with six bands First posthumous edition, which also appeared at the same time in French. Remarkable sixteenth-century treatise on physiognomy and phrenology which remained unpublished for over a century illustrated with 800 woodcut figures, 3 of which are full-page. Finally, it also includes the treatise on moles with the original Greek text and Latin translation by "Melampus", a third-century author. Cardano, the most famous European doctor of his time, and professor of medicine in Padua, claimed to be able to draw horoscopes from facial appearance. (Garrison - Morton, 152).
