Description

Egyptian faience Ushabti
15th Dynasty, 1650 - 1550 BC; height cm 12,7 (5’’); In turquoise faience standing upright, with his feet together wrapped in a shroud; the hands are crossed on the chest holding the tools symbolizing agricultural work, while a trapezoidal seed sack hangs behind the back.
From the late New Kingdom on, the iconography and purpose of the ushabtis seem to have been standardized: from substitutes for the deceased, these figurines became slaves at that time and served for their masters in the chores of the daily life.
