Description

Attractive octagonal intaglio in quartz, depicting a naked young male hero, seated on a short column, a statuette of Ceres or Annona in his extended right had, in a floral landscape – below clouds and the sun. Unfortunately broken at an angle. Tran-cisalpine work of the first quarter of the seventeenth century. The gem was supposedly oval originally, and recut for mounting in a decorative box. For a group of similar heroes – holding victories, see: Gabriella Tassinari, “Alcune considerazioni sulla glittica post-antica: la cosidetta ‘produzione dei lapislazzuli’”, in Rivista di Archeologia, vol. XXXIV (2010), pp. 67-143, pl. XL.
