Description

Eighteenth-century intaglio in carnelian, 19 x 15 mm, depicting the three-quarter facing bust of a bearded man. Except for the presence of hair, this gem strongly resembles a pseudo-portrait of Sophocles (Lucia Pirzio Biroli Stefanelli, La Collezione Paoletti. Stampi in vetro per impronte di intaglio e cammei, vol. I, Roma 2007, p. 137, no. II-246), and it also strongly resembles a (lost) old Hercules in amethyst (ibid., p. 292, no. IV-74). All of these likely copy (without the laurel-wreath) the ‘Roman Hercules’ in the Capponi collection (ibid., p. 238, no. III-450).
