Attractive Edwardian gold bracelet, set with 11 intaglios, linked by a double-chain in the Renaissance spirit. Depicts the bust of Socrates, the bust of Newton with the 1680 comet, the bust of Zeus, the bust of Otho, an enthroned facing Zeus, a Janus-like bust of a young lady and an old man, the bust of a philosopher, a muse facing a theater mask, an Eros standing that brings a torch towards a flying butterfly (a type described as ‘l’anima oppressa dalla passione’ by Paoletti), the bust of a Seleucid king, a laurelled emperor. The gems are in a variety of materials (bloodstone, carnelian, paste), and from a variety of dates (ancient, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries).
