Description

Onyx cameo of the 2nd-half of the sixteenth century, 36 x 37 mm, depicting the busts of a bearded man and a lady with a pearl necklace: this is the so-called « Aurelius and Faustina » type, represented in the British royal collection (see: Kirsten Aschengreen Piacenti and John Boardman, Ancient and Modern Gems and Jewels, London 2008, p. 117, no. 179). Note that the cameo is carved of white and translucent layers only, and pasted on a thick black background which gives it an attractive ‘white and blue’ appearance.
