Lucania, Nomos, Laos, c. 510-500 BC; AR (g 7,91; mm 22; h 12); ΛAFΣ, man-headed bull standing r., head reverted, Rv. [MON], same type incuse. HNItaly 2270 (same dies); SNG Copenhagen 1145 (same dies); SNG ANS 122.
Very rare, cabinet tone, unusually well-preserved for this issue, extremely fine.

Obverse and reverse legend taken together compose the ethnic of the city, "of Laos", river-port colony of Sybaris, to which the remaing inhabitants of the mother-city would have fled after the destruction of Sybaris in 510 BC. The type seems to support this view, the Sybaritic bull converted into conventional river-god type to represent the river-god Laos.
