Description

Bruttium, Stater, Terina, c. 300-356 BC; AR (g 7,56; mm 19; h 11); TEPINAIΩN, female head r., with elaborate hair, wearing triple pendant earrings an necklace, Rv. Winged Nike seated on cippus l., holding bird alighting on her hend. Holloway & Jenkins 84; HNItaly 2629; SNG Copenhagen - SNG ANS 852.
Rare, cabinet tone, high relief, beautiful style and one of the best known specimens, good extremely fine.

This coin represents one example of the age of prosperity and power of Terina, and it is directly influenced by the works on the coinage of both Olympia and Syracuse. The head on obverse is evidently inspired by Euainetos, while the reverse is a direct evolution of the die dated c. 410-405 BC. That die had been undoubtedly inspired by the coinage of Elis for the 87th Olympiad in 432 BC, which in its turn was a celebration of the masterful Nike balustrade in the Temple of Athena Nike on the Athenian Acropolis.
