Description

Rare and unusual roman carnelian intaglio. Aplustre: particular ornament on the stern of some ships, derived from the ancient idea of the watercraft being a massive sea creature, whose fantail would emerge from water. The iconography of the aplustre, highly auspicious, can be found in some roman coin production from the Republican period (aureus and denarius - C. Cassius Longinus/M. Servilius). Intaglio characterized by a realistic and refined depiction. Light chipping. 1st century B.C.
10 x 8 x 2 mm
