Description

An agate intaglio. Omphale. Omphale was a Lydian queen, daughter of the river-god Iardanus. After the myth, Hercule was made slave of the beautiful queen during three years and forced to be dressed as a woman and spined the wool, letting go his leonte. Instead the queen wore the leonte and held the club as figured in this intaglio, allegory of the submission and love revenge. Omphale standing on her feet put her right hand on her hip, and holds the club with the left hand. At her feet, a vase well detailed (identified as an apulian trozella). Ground line. Bezel of big dimension. Interesting postclassical work.
