A late roman carnelian intaglio. The good shepherd.
8 x 10 x 2 mm
The standing character holds a sheep on his shoulders, and is flanked at the bottom by two other sheep. In the background, a shrub with a bird on it. Ground line. Christological representation, inspired by statuary models and marble reliefs. Signs of wear and chipping on the edge. Rare.
3rd-4th century AD.
