Description

A BRONZE STANDING BUDDHA
Thailand, Mon-Dvaravati style, 8th-9th century

The standing deity with his arms folded at the elbow in the gesture of teaching (vitarkamudra), dresses in a large sanghati robe that leaves the right shoulder and part of the chest uncovered.

18 cm high

Provenance: ambassador Gerardo Carante.

The Mon-Dvaravati culture flourished in the central area of present-day Thailand between 7th and 9th century. It was then that in those territories the first Buddhist and Hinduist sculptures were made, characterized by rather original style and iconography, such as the use of the vitarkamudra gesture for both hands and not only for the right one as traditionally used in India.
