A GREY SCHIST COSMETIC DISH
Ancient region of Gandhara, Kushan period, 1st-2nd century

Circular in shape, the exposed surface divided into two compartments, the lower one hollow and without any decoration, the upper one in relief with a tree with leafy branches with two animals at its sides, the rim adorned with a frieze of paired leaflets.

13 cm diameter

Provenance: Italian private collection.
Dishes of this type have been found in non-sacred but secular excavation contexts, therefore their use must refer to domestic rituals in which particular substances such as cosmetics were used.
