Description

An ancient light blue chalcedony phalera with Gorgone's head.
1st century B.C. - 1st century A.D. (?).
Dim: 35 x 33 x 13 mm

The gorgon's head is presented, eyes wide-opened, her mouth opened and her tongue drawn. The hair formed from curly locks frames the forehead and leaves the ears visible. This facial expression refers to the apotropaic functions of the mythological creature. Probably a roman revival of an archaistic model (cfr. ancient greek coinage). Provenance: France, ex collection Ursula B. Published in D., DEL BUFALO, Precious Protraits, Small Precious Stone Sculptures if Imperial Rome, n.258, p. 115.
