Descrizione

Very attractive neoclassical intaglio in orange carnelian, 20 x 16 mm, the bust of Medusa. The iconography is copied from a celebrated intaglio signed by Solon, a 30 x 25 mm chalcedony that was found in 1709 in a vineyard on the Caelian Hill near S. Giovanni e Paolo (Rome). Broken shortly after in an attempt to make an impression, it was acquired for 3 Sequins by Marcantonio Sabbatini (1637-1724), who set it and sold it for 5 Sequins to Alessandro Albani (1692-1779), before buying it back from him for 50 scudi and selling it to Leone Strozzi (1657-1722). The gem was reproduced in engraving in 1724 by Baron Stosch, after which such copies were executed. This one is very well engraved, and especially desirable because it is not signed – making it a genuine neoclassical gem rather than a forgery. For a long list of gem-engravers having carved this subject, see: Gabriella Tassinari, “Iconografie ‘antiche’ nella collezione di calchi e cammei di Antonio Berini ai Civici Musei di Storia ed Arte di Trieste”, in Lanx. Rivista della Scuola di Specializzazione in Archeologia dell'Università degli Studi di Milano, no. 2 (2009), pp. 78-115, no. 6.
