Description

SEBASTIANO CONCA (Gaeta, 1680 - Naples, 1764)

Tiburtine Sibyl

Oil on canvas, cm. 63,5x48,5

In this refined painting Sebastiano Conca presents the effigy of the Sibyl of Tiburtina in a typical picture gallery format. This particularly successful composition was the subject of at least one further small copper drafting by Conca (auctioned by Pandolfini, paired with another Sibyl, on 20/04/2011, l.450) and was translated into print by Girolamo Carattoni at the end of the 18th century. For the graceful classicism of the composition and the elegance of the pictorial conduct, the painting finds significant and compelling confirmation in the corpus of Conca, among which the Allegory of Peace of the National Museum of Warsaw, the Sibyl of the Boston Museum of Fine Art and the Allegory of Fame from the Galleria dell'Accademia di San Luca in Rome.
