Description

ROMAN SCHOOL, SECOND HALF OF THE 17th CENTURY

Portrait of a young gentleman in armor

Oil on canvas, cm. 79x63. Antique frame

This remarkable portrait was attributed by Prof. Giancarlo Sestieri to Antonio Franchi known as Lucchese (Villa Basilica, Lucca, 1634 - Florence, 1709). More recently the canvas has also been referred to Jacob Ferdinand Voet (Antwerp, 1639 - Paris, 1689). Without wishing to dispel the attribution doubt here, it seems preferable to combine this sumptuous painting with the best portraiture produced in the Roman environment of the last decades of the seventeenth century.
