A STONE RELIEF WITH UMA-MAHESHVARA
Northern India, Rajasthan (?), 10th-11th century

The relief depicting Shiva on the left embracing his consort Uma on the right, the figures sculpted in plastic poses, at their feet the bull Nandi, on the base and behind the two characters other divinities, among which Skanda and Ganesha, the two children of the couple.

45 x 30 x 16 cm

Provenance: Italian private collection.


This representation of the union between the Hindu god Shiva and his consort Uma metaphorically symbolizes the origin of the universe.
