Fernando De Lucia (Napoli 1860 - Napoli 1925)

He entered very young in the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella in their cities, to study the bassoon, double bass, and later singing. After an intense work with teachers Beniamino Carelli and Vincenzo Lombardi, debuted at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples on March 5, 1885, in Gounod's Faust. The achieved fame won him immediately a contract for the Teatro Comunale of Bologna and the Pergola in Florence, where he obtained great success in 1886, with Thomas Mignon and Bizet's Carmen. In 1890 she toured in Argentina, where he was joined by news on the overwhelming success of Cavalleria rusticana, the first work of the young composer Pietro Mascagni, with which, on his return to Italy, he presented himself to the public at the San Carlo with triumphant success. On October 30, 1891, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, he created the title role of Mascagni's L'amico Fritz, which followed I Rantzau to Pergola on 10 November 1892, Silvano alla Scala in Milan May 25, 1895 and the Iris at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome November 22, 1898. The December 11, 1893 De Lucia made her debut at the Metropolitan in New York with Pagliacci by Leoncavallo, alongside Nellie Melba and Mario Ancona, and on March 15, 1897 he returned to La Scala for a long series of performances of La Bohème by Puccini, with sopranos Angelica Pandolfini and Camilla Pasini, and under the direction of Leopold Mugnone. However, the stylistic conversion cost at De Lucia premature degradation of voice quality; In fact, through the beginning of the twentieth century, after many successes, the content began to drastically reduce his commitments. In 1917, after performing for the last time in his Napoli's L'amico Fritz by Mascagni, he decided to end his career. On August 4, 1921, in the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, the funeral of Enrico Caruso, De Lucia sang mercy, Lord Niedermeyer (he was first requested Luisa Tetrazzini, but the Church forbade the performance of a woman). In 1922 he appeared for the last time in public, during a benefit concert, after which he gave to teaching, first at the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella and then privately, having among his pupils Gianna Pederzini and Georges Thill Autographed photos of famous tenor dated 04/26/1902
