Maria Caniglia (Napoli 1905 - Roma 1979)

Born into the family with origins in Abruzzo, studied at the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella in Naples with Agostino Roche, making his debut in 1930 at the Teatro Regio in Turin as Chrysothemis in Elektra. In the same year was Magda in The Sunken Bell Ottorino Respighi in Genoa, Elsa in Lohengrin in Rome and made his debut at La Scala in Milan in The foreign Ildebrando Pizzetti. He sang regularly in the Scala seasons until 1951. He performed then in Paris, Brussels, Salzburg, London and in South America (Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro). It was also, increasingly since 1938, at New York's Metropolitan Opera with Otello, Aida, Falstaff, Simon Boccanegra and Tosca. The war interrupted his appearances at the Met, and appeared later in Berlin, Zagreb, Ljubljana and other European cities. He closed his career in 1959 in Cairo with Tosca.
