German ivory and silver tankard -
19th century


partially gilded silver and elephant ivory (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797); circular foot decorated with vegetal scrolls, cylindrical ivory body carved with a battle scene, loop handle with herm and thumbpiece with mask, hinged lid similarly decorated with vegetal motifs topped by a soldier with shield bearing an inscription and date 1549.
Hallmarked with the import mark for silver in use in France since 1893.
Height 35.5 cm, foot 18 x 16.4 cm. Weight 1800 g.
Item condition grading: *** fair (missing inner container, restoration and replacement).
Accompanied by Ce.S.Ar. Centro Studi Archeometrici certificate of authenticity and by CITES certificate.
