Description

Roman red jasper intaglio. Draped female figure, characterized by an isiac emblem on her head, having a sceptre and lifting an animal (avian?); she is turning towards the simulacrum of Jupiter Serapis. The simulacrum is composed of a bust of the god, leaning on a base, with a frontal globe (and an elongated support on the back) between the two elements. A garland is in front of the female figure's feet; she is on a shortened ground line (which can also be interpreted as the base of a simulacrum). Interesting and rich allegorical scene which can be referred to Egypt and the cult of Serapis (offerings and devotion). 1st-2nd century A.D.
