Description

depicting the figure of the Virgin as depicted in the column dedicated to the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in Piazza Mignanelli in Rome, a few steps from the Spanish Steps, by the sculptor Giuseppe Obici and inaugurated on 8 December 1857. The sculpture rests on a black marble plinth base bearing the inscription '18 April 1867'; above, the emblems of the evangelists hold up the globe and the moon, on which rise the imposing figure of the Virgin. Stamped with the silver warranty mark in use in Rome (Papal States) after 1815 for a silver fineness of 10 ounces and 16 denari (889/1000), silversmith Giuseppe Nielli II working between the years 1826 and 1873 (Ref. Costantino Bulgari, Argentieri Gemmari e Orafi d’Italia, Parte Prima - Roma, Tomo 1, p. 197; Palombi, Roma 1980 marks no. 245). Height 22 cm, base 6.2 cm. Weight 635 gr. Item condition grading: **** good.
