Jacques Callot (1592-1635)


Saint Sebastian, protector of the city of Nancy, was invoked against the plague epidemic that broke out in the city around 1630. The saint is represented in the center of the scene pierced by archers in the midst of a sort of theatrical backdrop made up of classical elements of ancient Rome . On the left the Colosseum, on the right a sort of round temple and in the background the Capitoline Hill with the Traiana and Antonina columns, and the arches of Titus and Septimius Severus. Signed in the lower right plate. First state of two, before the address of Israel Silvestre.

. Good proof, rich in tones, slightly trimmed along the margin line. Overall excellent state of conservation.
