Description

Jacques Callot (1592-1635)

La Distribution des récompense, 1633

Original Etching. Signed on plate “Callot fecit, Frad excudit” lower right. Very good condition except some light discoloration.

Wonderful and Rare proof of the Second state(of three), on watermark "huchet" paper. Dated 1633, numbered on plate -lower right on margin. Il is the 18th and last etching from the Callot’s series “Les Grandes Misères et Malheurs de la Guerre”, showing the brutality of soldiers towards citizens, and especially farmers. This is the key-artwork to understand the whole serie: the prince distributes the rewards only to general and noble people.

Jacques Callot (Nancy, 1592 - 1635) was one of the most famous engraver of the French the 17th century.
