Signed on plate on the lower left margin. The artwork is glued on cardboard.

Beautiful artwork representing an old figure of a patriarch holding a book in his hands. The figure is monumental, while the background is simple. The figure of the patriarch recalls an old sculpture.

Charles-Dominique-Joseph Eisen (1720 - 1778) was a French painter and engraver. He was the son and pupil of Frans Eisen, born in Valenciennes. In 1741, he moved to Paris, and in the following years he entered the studio of Le Bas. He became a painter and draftsman of the King and a drawing-master of Madame de Pompadour. In 1777, he retired to Brussels, where he died in poverty in 1778.
