Georg Braun (1541-1622) / Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590)

PVTEOLI - Pozzuoli. Civitates Orbis Terrarum Braun & Hogenberg, volume III, 1575; Copper engraving, first edition with Latin text on the verso, 1575 - Cologne; NOTES ABOUT THE WORK: The Civitates Orbis Terrarum, or more commonly the "Braun & Hogenberg", is the largest atlas with views and city maps ever published, with its 6 volumes and 363 engravings, one of the best-selling works in the last quarter of the 16th century. The first volume was published with Latin text in 1572, the sixth volume in 1617, but there were various editions during the period, differentiated from the French and German text. The authors Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590) shared roles in the enormous production of the work, Braun wrote the texts and comments on the views, while Hogemberg, a German cartographer who had worked for Ortelius, mainly occupied plants and views. But there are many artists, engravers and cartographers who collaborated, including Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1600) who provided the drawings for many of the engraved plates. Like many printers, all from Cologne.
