Description

Holy Water Font

Holy water font formed by a zoomorphic figure (lion?) on which sits a little angel holding with his hands a basin clothed for use as a holy water stoup.
Majolica painted in polychromy; in the middle of the basin in brown manganese the inscription: above, ".M. 1779. B"; underneath, "S" between flakes.
H. cm. 18; width cm. 10. Cond: very good.

Sicily, Sciacca, master M B; 1779.

Rare Sicilian stoup, which echoes the production of Caltagirone, but the letter "S" in clear evidence refers to the very rich ceramic production of Sciacca since the fifteenth century, with peaks of excellence in the seventeenth-eighteenth centuries.
