Poetry and Painting Muses, 1898
Black and white xylograph applied on Japan paper, 53,5 x 43,5 cm
Poetry and Painting Muses is an original print realized in 1898.
The series contains xylographs that represent some of the most famous paintings of Arnold Böcklin. Printed by J.J. Weber, Leipzig.
Original title of the artwork: Poesie und Malerei. The title is printed on the lower right corner.
The print was realized by Johann Jacob Weber and it is part of the series Meisterwerke der Holzschneidekunst (original title: SECHZEHN HOLZSCHNITTE NACH GEMÄLDEN ARNOLD BÖCKLIN (MEISTERWERKE DER HOLZSCHNEIDEKUNST, NEUE FOLGE HEFT V) printed in 1898 and dedicated to Arnold Böcklin.
This black and white xylograph represents the two Muses of Poetry and Painting: the scene is set in a wood and shows the two Muses next to a fountain. The print represents the famous painting commissioned by Heinrich von Korn that adorned the fireplace in his palace. In 1909, the painting was donated to the Museum of Fine Arts of Silesia in Wroclaw. The canvas was lost in 1945 so this xylograph is an important documentation of the painting.
Good conditions, except for yellowing of the paper (especially along the margins), and a stain on the higher right.
