Description

Diana Scultori (1547-1612) after Giulio Romano

The engraving translates, enriching it with figures, a fresco after a drawing by Giulio Romano made in the Sala di Troia of Palazzo Ducale in Mantua by Fermo da Caravaggio between 1538 and 1539. The subject derives from a Roman relief that was preserved in the same Ducal Palace. This engraving is considered one of the best proofs of Diana Scultori. At the center of the scene the body of Patroclus in the arms of Menelaus while the battle rages around. Bottom left “Iulius Roma. inv. " and below "Achilles defuctus". (see Stefania Massari edited by, Mantuan engravers of the 16th century. Giovan Battista, Adamo, Diana Scultori and Giorgio Ghisi, from the collections of the National Cabinet of Prints and National Chalcography, Rome, De Luca Editore, 1981, pp. 89-90 No. 145).
