Description

Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720 - 1778)

Perspective view of the same candelabrum
Artist proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, wide margins, representing a perspective view of an ancient marble candelabrum “from Piranesi Museum”. Signed on plate “Cav.re Piranesi F.” on the lower left corner. This etching is dedicated “To Sir. Giacomo Byres, Scotish Architect“. There is a long description explaining the provenance of the object. Very good condition, despite a lightly worn paper and some tiny foxing marks on lower margin. Normal folds of the paper, left and right margins lightly damaged.

Giovanni Battista Piranesi

Undoubtedly Piranesi was one of the most important engravers in 18th century even if he was well-known as an architect and an archaeologist: the greatest engraver in the period from Rembrandt a Goya. The generations after him have continued to imagine the Ancient Rome as the artist has portrayed his magnificent in "Vedute".
