Pomona, a splendid wood nymph, spent her days tending the orchards and the garden, ignoring the numerous suitors who showed up to court her. One of these was the Vertumnus God, who by governing the succession of the seasons, had the power to change his appearance. So after trying in vain numerous guises to win Pomona's love, he decided to take on that of an elderly woman with a kind character, who praised the beauty of Vertumnus and persuaded her of the love he felt for her, managed to conquer her
